But why is getting better at basketball for Lebron like eating? This alignment is presented as simply natural, or as a happenstance of his nature or psychology, whereas it may be attributable to more contingent factors, such as a) longstanding good habits (since childhood) and b) ideal flow state calibration (a sense of joy tends to follow from what one is good at; joyful engagement is likely a revenue source for engagement-specific Motivs).

I don't know, but it is surely some combination of nature/psychology and contingent factors such as external incentive structures (Lebron James playing basketball makes him lots of money). Nevertheless, all the "like eating" analogy was meant to say is that in this moment in time, and indeed for many years now, Lebron has been saturated with motivation to play basketball. His psychology/nature today is certainly based upon many contingencies and his past—the results of a) have had a hand in forming it. b) strikes me as quite similar to a natural inclination. If we all have an instinct, or at least a penchant, to continue what we are good at, then being good at something "naturally" motivates a person to do it much more.
